GIGS

Friday 30/05/03 - The Grapes, Bury St Edmunds

Ruperts the headliners of the night played through the first hour of their set, had me jumping around for ages, cant really remember what songs they played,  I had been drinking since 3.00! Then taking a break in their set called up the Sitting Tenants, who had only found out they were playing two days before,  and hadn't jammed for two months. The debut gig, started with a ropey version of Nirvanas 'Dive' no singing, except the occasional yelp from Crab and Cheeze. Then in burned 'Prescription Pills',  but half way through the song, the guitar started cutting out, so Cheeze lifted his guitar above his head, and brought it down on the floor, more times than I could count, as the guitar was laying in shards, Crab flipped over his bass, and smashed it down, and began surfing around on the back of the bass. The set ended abruptly and Cheeze was then kicked out by a security guard.  Pete, Crab and Alex of Ruperts were soon to be booted out as well. Ruperts were awesome on the night, Sitting Tenants were pure bred chaos in a hippy shell.

Saturday 05/07/03 - Rock on the Rec, Haverhill.

S.O.D were the first band on with a nice bit of metal, Brides of Yesterday were wicked, probably one of the best on the bill, Gambler played a good range in stuff, with some ska tunes in there as well, the only band of the night to have their own dancer on stage! The Outpatients played through some funky indy tunes which got the crowd going.  The Sitting Tenants were the next to be up on stage, after setting up everything, and after Stu introduced the band as Melldope and Sitting Tenants, they burnt into the first chords of 'Dive', but Crabs bass was still fucked from the first gig, and had a nasty crackle in the amp, so borrowed Lee Gladden's five string, and started again. After that came 'Prescription Pills' which with the rabid vocals over the top sounded insane, then came 'Black Eyes' which was the first song which had been 'sung' in rather than screamed, then they played a new one, which doesn't have a name, a nice dancey sort of tune, though there wasn't much movement in the crowd, dammit. Then came another Nirvana cover 'Scentless Apprentice', Cheezes screams echoing out over Haverhill,  finally as the ending song done 'Tourettes' which was probably the tightest song of the lot, a wicked song to end the night on, no guitars were broken at this gig though. Charlie Star were the next up, with their Manics tinged rock, sounded really tight, and threw in a cover of 'You Love Us' as well. Next on were the mighty Ruperts, with a huge banner hanging from the stage they looked all the bit the local heroes, and the fact this whole gig was organised by them. Starting with 'Chalkstone Estate' and then running through a good hour and a half of stuff to make up for the absent Percy Thrower. Ruperts stole the show as usual, the audience in their hands, the stage divings and invasions started, the mosh pit grew bigger by the minute. Though I cant really remember their set they, ended with the destruction of the drum kit, and seeing everything be trashed onstage was wicked, though all the stuff was put back together for the encore of 'Road to Damascos'. Brilliant end to a damn good day.
